Science Fiction Science Fair

Last week we introduced some of the real science behind Madeleine L’engle’s A Wrinkle in Time.  This week, we’re going to plan a Book Club Science Fair experiment (or experiments) to delve into the concepts behind…

  • Astronomy:  The author was intrigued by Albert Einstein’s theories of space and time.  While we can’t go stargazing for weeks in Book Club, there are ways to model space phenomena in our STREAM (Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts, Math) Lab.
  • Biology:  In the first chapters of the book, Calvin feels like he’s home upon entering Mrs. Murry’s lab.  There are many excellent projects studying living organisms.
  • Tesseracts :  The fourth dimension?! Or is it a fifth dimension?  Anyone else confused like me yet? 🙂

How can we turn these big ideas into a testable questions?  We can start by exploring ideas in a literature review.  Here are a few suggested sites to get you started:

December is Picture Book Club! :)

First, thank you to everyone who contributed to our book club breakfast & discussion and/or met us at the theater to watch Wonder!  We had a terrific turnout (including a bunch of book club alumni!) and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

While we decide on our next big read, let’s read a couple of picture book classics that are being released in theaters soon (but we’ll wait to see one after school when it comes out on DVD in the Spring)…

  1. Friday, 12/8:  Chris Van Allsburg’s Caldecott Award-winning Jumanji
  2. Friday, 12/15:  Munro Leaf’s The Story of Ferdinand

Ps.  Did you see the poster for A Wrinkle in Time while we were at the theater?!?!  This classic book and author is one of my favorites!  Check out the trailer:
